VMware-to-Proxmox migration is the process of moving virtual machines, storage, and networking from a VMware environment (ESXi/vCenter) to Proxmox VE while preserving performance, backup, and continuity. It starts with an assessment of the fleet and proceeds in waves, with a pilot, agreed window, validation, and a defined rollback.
Broadcom’s VMware licensing changes raised renewal costs and reduced contractual predictability for many companies. At the same time, Proxmox VE matured in KVM virtualization, high availability, software-defined storage, and integrated backup. The decision, however, must be technical: not every workload migrates the same way, and storage and network design determine the outcome.
| Item | VMware (ESXi/vCenter) | Proxmox VE |
|---|---|---|
| Hypervisor | Proprietary, licensed per CPU/subscription | KVM + LXC, open source with optional subscription |
| High availability | vSphere HA | Native cluster HA |
| Storage | VMFS, vSAN, and external arrays | LVM, ZFS, Ceph, iSCSI/NFS |
| Backup | Third-party tools or VADP | Built-in backup + Proxmox Backup Server |
| Support | Broadcom/partner contract | Proxmox subscription with enterprise support |
Proxmox is not “free VMware”. It is a different product with its own operating model. The gain comes from correct design, standardization, and support — not just swapping the hypervisor.
The Proxmox VE subscription provides access to the stable enterprise repository and vendor support. Nyverra is a Proxmox partner and supplies the subscription with an invoice, helping with sizing and cluster operations after migration.
Why migrate
Proxmox VE is open-core with optional support—we align TCO and roadmap to your contract, without fixed savings promises without an assessment.
We prioritize less critical workloads, agreed windows, and acceptance criteria per VM or group—with a documented rollback plan.
Disk, network, and storage conversion aligned with your current design (SAN, NAS, ZFS/TrueNAS where applicable).
Integration with Veeam Backup & Replication or your existing solution—restore tested before shutting down the source hypervisor.
Zabbix, Grafana, or the agreed stack so you do not lose visibility the day after migration.
Runbook, basic training, and contracted support via the Nyverra Service Management after delivery.

Pricing and timelines depend on inventory (VM count, storage, RTO/RPO). The proposal details assumptions and exclusions.
